The Middle Fork of the Flathead River is one of the few American rivers whose legal boundary is also a park boundary. Its centreline marks the western edge of Glacier National Park for roughly 90 kilometres. Rafters therefore travel with the park on one bank and the Flathead National Forest on the other. Congress designated the Middle Fork a Wild and Scenic River in 1976, eight years after the Act itself passed. That status froze the corridor. No dams were built, no channel was straightened, and the water still runs the colour of bottle glass. The river gathers in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, where the Great Bear Wilderness holds its headwaters at elevations above 2,100 metres. Snowmelt off the Continental Divide feeds it until midsummer. That origin explains the temperature: even in August the Middle Fork rarely exceeds 13°C. It also explains the clarity. Glacial flour is largely absent here, unlike the milky outflows further north, so the riverbed is visible through several metres of current. The Great Northern Railway laid track along the south bank in 1891, choosing the Middle Fork canyon as its route over Marias Pass. US Highway 2 followed the same line decades later. Both remain audible in places, and both explain why this stretch of river became accessible at all. Commercial outfitting began in West Glacier in the 1970s and now operates under National Park Service and Forest Service permits. The rapids carry names inherited from railroad crews and early guides: Bonecrusher, Jaws, Pumphouse, Repeater. Most sit in the Class II to Class III range through summer, easing as flows drop from a June peak that can exceed 400 cubic metres per second to late-August levels a fraction of that. The geology beneath is Belt Supergroup rock — argillite and quartzite laid down more than a billion years ago, coloured red and green by iron oxidation, and among the oldest sedimentary strata exposed anywhere in North America. Wildlife uses the corridor as a highway. Bald eagles nest in cottonwoods above the gravel bars. Harlequin ducks, uncommon in the interior west, breed on these fast riffles and are counted here annually. Bighorn sheep descend to the water in early morning. The park itself, established in 1910 and later half of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, charges 135 USD for entry — the standard vehicle fee of $35 plus a $100 per-person non-US resident surcharge.
